Leeks can be grown most of the year.

Shallots

This family is particularly suited to Tasmania's cool climate as long as you obey a few simple rules about when to plant them and when to feed them.
Basically alliums grow leaf and then set a bulb.

This family is dependent on day length to determine when it will bulb and ultimately run to seed.

Ultimately the size of the bulb is determined by the size of the vegetative growth,
so the objective is to have them grow strongly in vegetative growth before setting a bulb.
I grow 4 types of alliums and rotate them through my garden beds,
never putting a member of the allium family in a bed that previously held alliums.
Carrots are an ideal crop to follow onions , and I usually make a late sowing of carrots on the patch I have harvested onions from or sow carrots in between the rows when I sow onions .

It pays to trim the roots and tops of the seedlings to encourage them to grow new leaf from the base once transplanted.
By digging shallow trenches you can lay the onions bulb in the trench and backfill easily with your fingers.
Water the seedlings in well and regularly fertilise with Comfrey tea during the vegetative growth stage.
Onions rely on a strong vegetative growth stage and then store the nutrition of this in their bulbs
before throwing up a seed head in the next season.

and allow the tops to die down and fall over.

In preparation of the bed, work the soil well to a depth of 30 cm and apply a dressing of COF or Dynamic Lifter at 250gms per square metre. Pre soak the cloves for 24 hours in a seasol solution 1:100 overnight prior to planting.
Plant the cloves with their top upwards at a depth of about 2.5 cm.
Water well and keep the bed moist until the shoots appear.
When the shoots appear, regular side dress the growing plants with COF until the cold of winter sets in.
The plants will put on another growth spurt in about September once the weather warms.
You can keep feeding them and watering them well until the end of October.
In November the tops will start to yellow. This is an indication that the plants are starting to bulb.
There is no further need for fertilise and no water.
About Mid December, you can pull the plants out of the ground, shake all the dirt off the roots
and leave the plants on the top of the bed to dry thoroughly. If lots of rain is forecast, it is best to put the bulbs under cover.
During this time, the plants will store the available food in the leaves as they dry.
When the leaves are thoroughly dry you can braid the bulbs onto a string and hang in a cool dry place.
They should last almost over winter before starting to sprout if you have dried them properly.
I save the best of my garlic cloves for seed each year.

They will go to seed once the weather warms in October, so harvest through September and use in soups or as a steamed vegetable. Delicious!

Chives
Chives are the easiest of herbs to grow in a garden and because thaey are a perennial allium, once planted, you will have them for years. Personally, I like to contain them in a pot as they have a habit of spreading if allowed free space.
All parts of the chive plant are edible, though it’s primarily grown for the leaves. Chives have a delicate onion flavor in both the leaves and flowers.
Garlic chives look more similar to true chives—dark green leaves and a grass-like appearance, but again are a different species. The leaves of garlic chives are flat and have a flavor that is more garlicky than oniony.
One way to grow chives is to divide an existing plant—ask a neighbor or family member if they’ll dig up a few for you. Or you can start chives from seed. The seeds are tiny, the size and color of poppy seeds. Plant them 1/4-inch deep in well-drained soil. You can plant them to grow in a clump or in a tidy row in your vegetable garden.
When to Harvest ChivesChives are ready to harvest once they reach six inches in height. Choose stems that are firm with no browning, and snip them using sharp scissors. The plant will regrow leaves all season long, so harvest them often.When the purple flowers appear in early summer, you have two options: snip them off right away so the plant’s energy will go into growing leaves, or let the flowers stay until they are dry and faded. At this point they are full of seeds (over 100 seeds per flower head).
